James Thorburn
Director of Clinical Research

James has over 20 years clinical research experience. He has worked as a Clinical Scientist in the National Health Service, UK for before joining the Pharma industry. After joining the Pharma industry in 1993, James worked for a privately owned Contract Research Organisation in Southampton, UK and later for PPD UK.


In 1997, James left PPD, UK for Hong Kong to take up a position with the University of Hong Kong where he helped to establish the Clinical Trials Centre, which is part of the Faculty of Medicine. Prior to the establishment of APCRA Limited, James was founder and CEO of Clinical Trial Concepts Limited, a Hong Kong-based clinical research consultancy, until 2011.


In 2008, James left Clinical Trial Concepts to help establish APCRA Limited in Hong Kong, a British-owned, professionally managed clinical research services company. During his time in the pharmaceutical industry, James has developed a broad therapeutic background, extensive project management skills, line management and general management experience and expertise as a company director.

Gabriele Poerschke
Director, Medical Affairs

Dr. Gabriele Poerschke obtained her medical degree at the Johannes Gutenberg Universitat Mainz, Germany. Subsequently, she obtained a Master of Medical Sciences degree in Clinical Research Methodology from The University of Hong Kong. She has published a number of articles on evidence-based vaccinology and public health and has also been involved in several clinical trials in Asia.

With more than 15 years of medical and pharmaceutical experience, Dr. Poerschke also has extensive experience of forensic medical claims for private medical insurance claims and fees associated with in-patient and out-patients medical treatments in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dr. Poerschke is a key and highly valued member of the senior management team at APCRA, who is responsible among other things, for overseeing the provision of medical advice (both in-house and to clients), interpretation of study-related adverse events, medical writing and in-house medical training.

Dr. Theresia Liem
Medical Advisor

Dr. Theresia Liem has over twenty years of clinical experience and has held a number of positions as Physician and a Specialist/Consultant in the field of intern medicine and clinical oncology, in the Netherlands.

Prior to arriving in Hong Kong, Dr. Liem worked in private practice, in the Netherlands and was Chairperson of the Oncology Commission of Laurentius and an Oncology Clinical Trial Coordinator. Since being in Hong Kong, she has been involved in the research as a Visiting Scholar at the Prince of Wales Hospital, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Liem achieved her Doctor of Medicine Degree from Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She has been trained as an Internist at the University Hospital Maastricht and has been trained and served as a specialist-Oncologist and a Haemato-oncologist at the Dr. Daniel den Hoed Cancer Centre, Erasmus Medisch Centrum in the Netherlands.

During her spare time and retirement, Dr. Liem is a voluntary Medical Director and Board Member for The Leprosy Project, operated by RCHKS (Rotary Club Hong Kong South)-Handa Projects International Limited.
